Knowledge Base: Printhead Cleaning & Maintenance
The printhead is the "heart" of your wall printer. Because it utilizes microscopic piezoelectric nozzles to jet UV ink, maintaining a clean environment within the head is the only way to ensure long-term reliability and photorealistic print quality.
Why is Regular Cleaning Necessary?
Unlike traditional desktop printers, wall printers use UV-curable ink, which is designed to dry and solidify rapidly.
-
Clogging Prevention: Ink residue on the nozzle surface can dry out when exposed to stray UV light or air, leading to "nozzle deflection" (crooked spraying) or complete clogs.
-
Ink Consistency: Regular maintenance ensures that pigments don't settle within the printhead channels, maintaining vibrant color accuracy.
-
Component Longevity: Proper cleaning prevents back-pressure and chemical buildup that can degrade the delicate piezo elements inside the head.
Standard Cleaning Routines
Professional operators should follow a tiered maintenance schedule to keep the machine in peak condition:
Daily: The Nozzle Check
Before starting any project, perform a Nozzle Check through the DXonJet control software. This prints a small test pattern that identifies if any specific color channel is blocked.
Weekly: Standard Software Cleaning
If the nozzle check shows missing lines, use the software’s built-in Cleaning/Pump function.
-
This process uses the internal pump to pull fresh ink through the head, flushing out micro-bubbles and debris.
-
Pro Tip: Do not over-clean. Performing 1–2 cycles is usually sufficient. If the clog persists, check the Damper or ink supply lines.
Post-Project: Surface Wiping
Using a lint-free wipe and DXonJet-approved cleaning solution, gently wipe the surface of the printhead to remove any stray ink droplets or dust collected from the job site.
Advanced Feature: "Travel Mode" (Auto-Maintenance)
One of the most significant risks to a wall printer is inactivity. If the printer sits idle for several days, the ink inside the head can settle or dry.
DXonJet’s Travel Mode solves this problem:
-
How it works: When activated, the printer remains in standby and automatically performs a 5-second ink extraction and cleaning cycle every 48 hours.
-
The Benefit: This keeps the internal channels moist and clear, allowing you to go on vacation or take breaks between jobs without worrying about returning to a ruined printhead.
Manual Maintenance & "Ink Pumping"
In cases of stubborn clogs or after the machine has been in storage, a manual flush may be required.
-
The Process: Using a specialized syringe and cleaning manifold, professional solution is pulsed through the channels.
-
Warning: This should only be performed following the official DXonJet Video Tutorials to avoid applying too much pressure, which can rupture the internal membranes.
Maintenance Frequency Guide
| Usage Frequency | Recommended Action |
| Printing Daily | Standard software cleaning only when nozzle check fails. |
| Idle for 2-3 Days | Run 1 cleaning cycle before the next print. |
| Idle for 7+ Days | Activate Travel Mode or perform a manual flush. |
| Job Site (Dusty) | Wipe nozzle surface daily with lint-free wipes. |
