Understanding Print Direction in Vertical Wall Printing

In vertical wall printing, Print Direction refers to whether the printhead carriage deposits ink while moving in one direction or both. This setting is a critical choice for operators, as it directly impacts both production speed and the visual sharpness of the final mural.

Uni-directional Printing (Precision Mode)

In uni-directional mode, the printhead carriage only fires ink during one part of its vertical travel cycle—specifically during the top-to-bottom stroke. Once the carriage reaches the bottom, it returns to the top position without printing to begin the next pass.

  • Superior Accuracy: Because ink is always ejected while the carriage moves in the same direction, mechanical "play" and belt tension variances are minimized. This ensures that every droplet lands with microscopic precision.

  • Error Compensation: It is the "safety mode" for wall printing. If the track is on slightly uneven ground or there is a minor vertical step value error, uni-directional printing can mask these issues.

  • Best For: High-detail indoor murals, fine typography, and photorealistic portraits where "ghosting" or blurriness must be eliminated.

Bi-directional Printing (Efficiency Mode)

Bi-directional printing allows the printhead to deposit ink in both directions—firing droplets on the way down and on the way up.

  • Maximum Productivity: By utilizing the return stroke, bi-directional printing nearly doubles the vertical output speed, significantly reducing the total project time.

  • Alignment Requirements: This mode demands perfect calibration. If the "bi-directional offset" is not set accurately, ink droplets from the upward pass will not align with those from the downward pass, resulting in a blurry or "doubled" image effect.

  • Best For: Large-scale outdoor murals, simple geometric designs, and projects with tight deadlines where the primary viewing distance is several meters away.

Which Direction Should You Choose?

Selecting the right mode depends on the balance between your deadline and the required detail:

Feature Uni-directional Bi-directional
Print Speed Slower (50% efficiency) Faster (100% efficiency)
Image Sharpness Highest (No ghosting) High (Requires calibration)
Setup Ease Simple Technical (Needs offset check)
Best Application Indoor / Fine Art Outdoor / Large Scale

Summary: The DXonJet Standard

The DXonJet VPJet series provides the flexibility to toggle between these modes via the control software. While bi-directional printing is the default for high-speed commercial work, we always recommend uni-directional printing for projects where high-precision text or intricate textures are the priority.
