Troubleshooting Wall Printers: 35 Common Problems and Solutions

A comprehensive guide by the DXonJet Technical Team. Compiled by Alex Wang.

Wall printers are a pinnacle of mural technology, but like any precision machinery, they require proper maintenance and troubleshooting. This guide categorizes 35 common issues to help you identify root causes and apply professional fixes quickly.

Image Quality & Precision

1Ghosting or Vertical Misalignment
-Cause: Incorrect bidirectional calibration.
-Solution: Recalibrate the bidirectional printing parameters in the control software.printing direction. aliquam dictum quis, tincidunt molestie, neque nibh ultricies nec, aliquam purus.
2Inaccurate Image Dimensions (Horizontal Misalignment)
-Cause: Wrong mode selection (Track vs. Wheel) or incorrect step parameters.
-Solution: Verify the active mode. If correct, recalibrate the horizontal (X-axis) step settings.
3Incorrect color output
-Cause: Poor test results, incorrect software color order, or mismatched ICC profiles.
-Solution: Perform a nozzle check, verify the color sequence in the software, and ensure the correct ICC file is selected in the RIP software.
4Vertical Lines in the Printed Image
-Cause: Machine vibration or too few "passes" selected.
-Solution: Check for stability and add weights if necessary. Increase the "Pass" count in the software settings for a smoother finish.
5Start Point Mismatch (Red Crosshair Center)
-Cause: Software offsets or hidden blank space in the original image file.
-Solution: Crop any empty margins in the image file and recalibrate the start-point coordinates.
6Image Smudging at Edges
-Cause: Low ambient temperature or the printhead is too far from the wall.
-Solution: Activate the heating function and adjust the printhead distance (Z-axis) closer to the wall.
7Blurred Patterns or General Poor Quality
-Cause: Physical calibration of the device is off.
-Solution: Perform a full mechanical and software recalibration.
8Image Distortion (Random Spray or Irregular Colors)
-Cause: RIP file parsing error or corrupted control software.
-Solution: Re-RIP the file and ensure your control software is updated to the latest version.

Connectivity & Software

1Software Cannot Connect to the Machine
-Cause: Incorrect network/IP settings or the board is powered off.
-Solution: Confirm the main circuit board is ON. Check wired/wireless connections and verify the PC’s static IP address matches the machine’s requirements.
2Software Icons Do Not Switch Automatically
-Cause: Windows Firewall is blocking commands.
-Solution: Add the control software to the Windows Firewall "Exceptions" list.
3ICC File Missing in RIP Software
-Cause: Accidental deletion or path error.
-Solution: Re-import the original ICC file according to your installation guide.
4Machine Fails to Receive Data from Computer
-Cause: Faulty data cable or IP conflict.
-Solution: Inspect the data cable for damage and re-verify the network configuration.

Ink System & Printheads

1Pumpbox Fails to Start
-Cause: Connection issue or lack of power supply.
-Solution: Check the metal probe connection. Use a multimeter to verify voltage at the Pumpbox when the button is pressed.
2Pump Motor Runs, But No Ink Flows
-Cause: Air leak in the tubing or the ink tank lid is closed too tightly.
-Solution: Loosen the ink tank lid. Check all tubing connections for air leaks using a syringe.
3Reverse Ink Flow (Sprays when "Clean" is pressed, but not "Pump")
-Cause: Reverse polarity in the Pumpbox wiring.
-Solution: Switch the power wiring leads on the Pumpbox.
4Printhead Suddenly Stops Spraying
-Cause: Loss of power or disconnected cable.
-Solution: Inspect the printhead ribbon cable and power supply integrity.
5Clogged Printhead
-Cause: Lack of maintenance, dust, or low-quality ink.
-Solution: Clean the head using specialized DXonJet cleaning solution and lint-free wipes.
6White Ink Extending Beyond Color Range
-Cause: Stray pixels in the original artwork.
-Solution: Clean the image edges in Photoshop or use the "White Ink Embedding" feature in your RIP software.
7Low White Ink Concentration
-Cause: Pigment sedimentation (settling).
-Solution: Shake the white ink tank or activate the automatic mixing motor before printing.
8Disappearance of Specific Colors During Printing
-Cause: Signal interference or faulty ribbon cable.
-Solution: Replace the printhead data cable.
9Missing Colors in Test Blocks
-Cause: Damaged channel or clogged damper.
-Solution: Swap ink tubes to test; if the issue moves, replace the damper. If it stays, the printhead channel is likely damaged.
10No Response During "Flash Spray"
-Cause: Driver failure or cable issue.
-Solution: Replace the printhead cable and check the board settings.
11Sudden Color Deviation (Previously Normal)
-Cause: Expired ink or corrupted RIP profile.
-Solution: Check the ink "Best Before" date and reinstall the RIP software.

Mechanical & Motor Issues

1Z-Axis (Vertical) Unresponsive
-Cause: Signal loss or mechanical obstruction.
-Solution: Check the circuit board signal lights and ensure the gear and rack are properly engaged.
2Wheels Do Not Move in "Wheel Mode"
-Cause: Motor failure or wiring damage.
-Solution: Use a multimeter to check the wheel motor wiring. Replace the motor if necessary.
3Severe Machine Vibration
-Cause: Uneven ground or lack of support.
-Solution: Adjust the track feet for stability and increase the "Waiting Time" in the software.
4Printhead Shakes During Descent
-Cause: Loose belt tension.
-Solution: Inspect and tighten the Z-axis drive belt.
5Printhead Touching Wall When Rising
-Cause: Machine is not perpendicular to the wall.
-Solution: Adjust the ground track to ensure the vertical mast is perfectly 90 degrees to the wall.

External Factors & Specialized Materials

1Power Outage During Printing
-Cause: External grid failure.
-Solution: Always use a UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) to protect your hardware and current print job.
2Ink Peeling Off Smooth Surfaces (Glass/Tiles)
-Cause: Poor adhesion or low UV curing power.
Solution: Apply a specialized coating (primer) before printing and enable Dual UV Light Mode.
